Westminster Village is a Continuing Care Retirement Community established in 1979. The Village campus is home to more than 350 people with over 160 employees. The village has multiple levels of living options from the Willows Duplexes with a very independent life style and minimal services, to apartments with more services and one meal, to licensed assisted living in Westview Wing starting the fall of 2006 and for complete care there is licensed skilled nursing at Martin Health Center.

Lacey Ritchart is the marketing and sales coordinator.

Q: Are all retirement communities alike?

A: Not at all. There are many different types of facilities. Their services and offerings are all different so you will have to do your homework to know what you're buying. There are low income retirement buildings which mainly provide just an apartment and in some cases a few social programs. There are parks where you bring your home, modular or RV. These adult living communities usually have a recreation center and social programs. Also, there are gated communities that can be free standing cottages, duplexes or even four-plexes. There again, they usually provide only social programs unless they are part of a larger retirement center.

Q: What's important in selecting a retirement community?

A: Consider your overall health and genetics. Do you have health concerns that require you to be near a certain medical institution or are you very healthy? Have you had a knee or hip replacement that will require you to choose a place that is handicap accessible? If you have special dietary needs, make sure the place you choose can supply them.

Q: Is there some place I can go and stay even if my health deteriorates?

A: Yes. Westminster Village is one such place. A CCRC, Continuing Care Retirement Community like ours is on a campus that has more than one level of care. It's very important for you to carefully read contracts and understand the cost and fees, so you know what you will get for your money. CCRC's can also offer a variety of services including: meals, housekeeping, maintenance, transportation, and medical services in certain areas. CCRC's will usually have activities and social programs like we do at Westminster Village.

Q: How do I find out what services are offered at a retirement community?

A: Everyone is different. You may want to have a view, or maybe a bridge group to play with, or perhaps it's the menu choices. That's why it's important to look over a brochure that most facilities offer. From the brochure you can start making lists of the pros and cons that are important to you.

Q: What kinds of things should I consider before moving into a retirement community?

A: Ask yourself the following: Does it feel like home? Do you like the staff? Do you like the floor plan? Then evaluate the value of what you get for the cost. Make sure you tour the facility and ask questions. If you have more that we can answer, please feel free to contact us at Westminster Village.

Q: My stitches don't look right. How do I adjust my sewing machine tension?

A: Modern sewing machines have pretty good tension, and if you've threaded the machine properly, chosen the right needle and stitch, everything should work pretty well. If your machine has a numbered tension dial, it likely has a highlighted area indicating "normal" tension, usually somewhere between 3-5. Under normal sewing circumstances, you rarely need to adjust the tension. If you have to adjust the tension for a given fabric or thread, you'll want to make sure your machine is threaded properly and that you have a new needle (correctly chosen for your project). If you're ready to banish tension problems forever, you might want to think about purchasing a new machine-one with automatic tension!

Q: How often should I change the needle in my sewing machine?

A: A good rule of thumb is to change the needle at least after 10 hours of sewing or with every new project. Don't wait for the needle to break. Often, poor quality stitching is just a symptom of a bad, or old needle. You should match the size and type of needle with the fabric you're sewing. A universal point needle will work for most fabrics, although you can purchase specialty needles like ball point for knits, metallic, titanium, denim and topstitching needles. The size of the needle is also dictated by the type of fabric. The finer the needle, the smaller the number. Use a size 70 or 80 for lightweight to medium-weight fabrics. A size 90 would be suitable for heavier fabrics, like denim or twill.

Q: How often should I service my sewing machine?

A: Depending on how much you sew, you should service your machine at least every 12-18 months. If you sew every day, we recommend you service your machine every 6 months or so. At Sew Much More, our factory-trained technicians can get your machine serviced for you on-site, usually within a week.

Q: What exactly is a serger?

A: A serger is a specialty machine that will finish the seams with an overlocking stitch, cutting off the excess fabric at the same time. It is not the same as a sewing machine, and while most sewing machines can do an overcast stitch, no sewing machine can actually finish the seams like a serger. Using 3 to 8 threads at a time, a serger will give you the same look as ready-wear, so the inside of your garments and home dec projects will look as great as the outside. Sergers can be used for more than just overlocking the seams of your garments, too, expanding your creative possibilities. And, with Baby Lock sergers, you get the ease of patented Jet-Air threading and Automatic Thread Delivery, so you never have to struggle with threading or tensions.

Q: What should I look for when purchasing a new sewing machine?

A: With any major purchase, you want to make the right decision and get the best value for your money. While overwhelming, we recommend you research and compare and purchase your sewing machine from an authorized sewing machine dealer. You want a machine that meets your sewing interests, with the features you need. From quilting to embroidering, beginner to accomplished seamstress, you'll want a full line of choices. You also want to make sure that you will get the most information and support after the purchase of your new machine. At Sew Much More, free lessons, advice and creative inspiration are just a part of the package. We have the experience to help you select the perfect machine for your needs and the knowledge to help you achieve your goals.
